Brian had another trial today. He has bad pulmonary hypertension, so they decided to give him Nitrous oxide to help relieve the pressure in his lungs. Pulmonary hypertension is one of the biggest hurdles a baby with CDH has to overcome. Despite the hypertension the Dr's still decided to take him off ECMO. There are a few major reasons for there decision. Brian has developed a bleed which is collecting in his silo (the bag containing his intestines). The Dr's feel more comfortable exploring and fixing the source of the bleed when he's off ECMO because his blood isn't as thinned. Reason two, the ECMO circuit is about to crash and replacing it will result in a several day set back. After more than a week it is normal to have to replace the circuit because it develops clots. If for some reason Brian needs to be put back on ECMO the circuit is still available for the next 24 hours. The final reason they took him off ECMO is because everything else the doctor's have been monitoring looks good.
