Today's trial has gone very well so far . It seems that the jet ventilator is doing the trick. The greatest difference between today's trial and the rest of Brian's trials is that he has actually shown improvement off ECMO. In the past trials he has maintained for a period of time and then declined. Brian is finally coming off ECMO today. The next 12 to 24 hours are critical. The doctors have decided not to rule out the possibility of reconnecting him one last time if he does take a turn for the worst, despite the risk. Their decision is based on how well he has tolerated ECMO so far and the fact that he has shown a little improvement with each trial. Brian still has a long road ahead of him but it is obvious that God is listening to all the prayers from our friends and family.

ReplyDeleteAlyssa & Cory,
ReplyDeleteMy name is Kirsten and I am Sarah Bushey's sister in law. I have an 18 month old daughter, Madeleine, who had an extreemly rough introuduction to this world. She has PH and ECMO was threatend numerous times. We were on NO2, and for the record it didn't work for her either.
I intimately know the ins/outs of NICU life. The hardship of leaving your child day in and day out. I know what it's like to see parents carry their kids out while yours is so sick. I know the powerlessness of the situation and how information is critical.
Take care of yourself, get sleep, advocate whenever possible, particularly when things dont seem right.
I am sure you have had the speech- two steps fwd, one step back (and sometimes 10 steps back, one step fwd). So is the life in NICU.
I am always able to talk if you want.
Thinking of you from DC.
Kirsten
